Tri-Village hosted Greenville in what has become a good intra county rivalry the last few years.
The young Green Wave looked confident after a lopsided win over Mississinawa Valley and ready to challenge the undefeated Patriots…and for one quarter appeared to be up to the task.
It was back-and-forth with 12 lead changes that ended with Tri-Village holding a 15-12 edge to end the period.
“We executed and played the best quarter of basketball up to this point in the season,” commented Greenville varsity basketball coach Dane French.
Tri-Village coming off a big 52-24 win last night over Arcanum appeared to be a bit slow out the gate.
“We were a bit sluggish to start,” said Tri-Village coach Josh Sagester who was presented a signed basketball from the team prior to start of the game recognizing 100 career wins at the school. “I think the Arcanum game took a little out of us but it’s something they need to push through.”
Push through is what they did exploding for 24 points with Kyle Pipenger leading the attack scoring the first 7 points…then Tyler Cook scored 6 straight as the Patriots got it rolling offensively. Six Patriots scored in the 2nd period including Haedon Schlechty, Andrew Willcox, Shade Brubaker and Evan Barger.
They also put the clamps on the Greenwave limiting them to just 3 points to take a big lead into the half 39-16.
Tri-Village limited Greenville to just 7 points in the 3rd frame with sophomore guard Zach Comer providing the bulk of the scoring for the Wave.
Kyle Pipenger again paced T-V with 8 points and Evan Barger added 4 in the paint to give the PATS a 56-22 advantage.
In the final stanza the Wave matched the 12 points they put up to start the game with junior guard Addison Miller knocking down 2 treys showing a little life for Greenville.
Tri-Village got a big quarter out of Andrew Willcox who scored 8 of his 10 points on the night to go along with 10 rebounds as Tri-Village took a 72-34 win.
“We got a off to a good start, said Dane French but when they (Tri-Village) got going we stopped executing.” “That is a good basketball team there and we showed signs of being able to compete…but we are young and had 2 or 3 freshman on the floor at times so it’s a process for this team but we will get there,” concluded French.
“Take away the slow start and I thought we played a real good basketball game tonight,” said Josh Sagester. “This team is so versatile our 6th and 7th guy off the bench went for 10 and 9 points each, and anytime you can get 30 points in the paint from your bigs you like your chances in the game.
“Andrew Willcox was very active tonight and had a real nice game,” concluded Sagester.
The Patriots were again led by Kyle Pipenger with 25 points with Andrew Willcox and Shade Brubaker both adding 10 points.
Willcox pulled down 10 rebounds and Shade Brubaker dished out 8 assists along with Matthew Werner handing out 5 dimes.
The Patriots are back in action Tuesday night with a key league game at home with Twin Valley South.
Greenville will travel to Troy to play the Trojans Tuesday night as well.
