Kyle Pipenger shook off the triangle and two defense employed by TV South and led the Patriots with 21 points for a key CCC win.

12/20/11 – New Madison Ohio

The Patriots coming in tonight were 5-0 and had yet been tested this season…but that test came tonight in the form of Twin Valley South. South came in with an athletic front court in size that matched that of Tri-Village and it turned out to be a good old fashioned slugfest that saw 11 lead changes or ties in the contest.

TV South got on the board first from a fielder by sophomore forward Michael Green which was answered by T-V junior point guard Matt Werner’s triple to start the game.

Panther freshman Anthony Augsburger (son of TV South Coach Tony Augsperger) followed that up with a trey to put South back on top 5-3.

Tri-Village then went on a 8-point run with a jumper from Tyler Cook, Evan Barger and two from Kyle Pipenger to go up 11-5…but TVS snuck in anther trey to close the quarter down 11-8.

The Patriots couldn’t pull away from the Panthers in the second quarter with Tyler Cook and Evan Barger both getting into foul trouble. Cook spent much of the time on the bench.

That’s when senior Johnny Myers went to work, after shutting him out for the first 10 minutes of play he would score 11 points and South would take a 23-20 lead into the half.

Kyle Pipenger was the only Patriot to score in the 2nd quarter with 9 points to keep the Patriots close.

“We really played a good first quarter and defended well,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “We ran into some foul trouble with our bigs in the second quarter and that opened it up for their main scorer Johnny Myers,” added Sagester.

The Patriots regained the lead in the third quarter at the 6:40 mark on a trey by Matt Werner. The lead was relinquished at the 3:30 mark but Pipenger got it back moments later on a short jumper.

Matt Werner then made a steal and took it the length of the court and the Patriots went up 33-30. Twin Valley South though hit another big shot as Augsburger hit another trey to tie the score at 33.

T-V again made a small run as Haedon Schlechty scored two inside off an offensive rebound, followed by Werner with another triple and the Patriots went up 38-33.

The slugfest continued with 30 seconds to play sophomore guard Troy Innis got a trifecta and South only trailed 38-36 at the end of three.

In the final stanza with Patriots holding a slim lead and Tyler Cook on the bench with 4 fouls Coach Sagester decided to hold the ball and try to pull Coach Augsperger out of the triangle and two defense.

With just a little more than two minutes coming off the clock Coach Sagester called a time-out. When play resumed Kyle Pipenger was fouled and he converted both free throws…but South answered gain this time by Cole Cottinghim with the trey and now the lead was just one 40-39.

Matt Werner came up big one more time hitting his 4th long range shot on the night giving T-V a 43-39 advantage at 3:53.

“That was a big shot and it gave us the opportunity to change things up and get them to play our game,” said Sagester.

The Patriots spread the floor controlling the clock and the ball forcing South to come out and foul. T-V then connected on 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch and went on to claim a hard fought 50-45 win over TV South.

“It was an ugly win, but we knew going in it was going to be a hard fought game,” said Sagester. “They (South) are a pretty good team and well coached, we knew we would see a triangle an two and they pretty much took away Shade Brubaker. But I thought Kyle Pipenger did a real nice job of handling it and he performed extremely well tonight,” added Sagester.

“Defensively we played well except in the 2nd quarter…but our bigs did a great job in shutting down Johnny Myers who only scored 2 points in the second half and the one right at the buzzer and it forced them (Twin Valley South) to find other ways to score and to their credit they knocked down some big shots,” continued Sagester.

“We really got an outstanding game from Matt Werner he stepped forward tonight and he knew we needed him.” “At halftime he said Coach I got this, we were a little worried because we didn’t see it in the first half…but boy did he ever come up big in the second half and I couldn’t be happier for him and this team.”

“Speaking of teams, I’m so proud of these guys…these guys are winners they find a way to win, where last year we found ways to lose in close games, I feel like these guys will find a way and they proved that tonight,” concluded Sagester.

Kyle Pipenger again led T-V with 21 points and Matt Werner added 17. Tri-Village is back in action on Friday night traveling to Lewisburg to play Tri-County North.

The junior varsity remains undefeated at 6-0 with a 15 point win over South with 3 players in double figures Damien Cook, Colton Linkous and Kaleb Chowning.
