New Madison One play made all the difference in Tri-Village’s 82-71 victory over Eaton in boy’s high school basketball Saturday.
With 1:25 remaining in the game and the homestanding Patriots leading 70-65, Eaton’s Craig Mize and Tri-Village’s Nate Lindamood were involved in a collision as they dove for a loose ball. Mize was whistled for his fifth foul and picked up a technical on his way to the bench.
Lindamood hit four consecutive free throws, was fouled two seconds later, and hit two more from the foul line. He added a layup following a steal, and Scoob Cook put a punctuation mark on the 25th consecutive regular season victory for the Patriots, with his second slam-dunk of the game.
“The technical was a big play,” Tri-Village coach Lee Falknor said. “It was a big turnaround. It gave us four points and the ball.”
While Tri-Village, 2-0, led throughout the game and had opened an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Falknor was not pleased with what he saw.
“I am disappointed with our half-court defense,” Falknor said. “I didn’t think we shot the ball well. Maybe it was because Eaton played so well. They came in and played hard.
“They out rebounded us, which was disappointing,” said Falknor. “Teams are going to come in here gunning for us. That might have been part of it.”
Cook led the Patriots with 21 points, while Lindamood had 19, Shane Bietry 12, Dirk Lewis 11, and Lee Brandon 10. Lewis had 11 assists, while Cook had 12 rebounds, and Randy Ward nine.
Tri-Village hit 18 of 21 free throws in the fourth quarter to ice the victory.
Tri-Village was 28 of 63 from the floor for 44 percent and 26 of 31 from the foul line for 84 percent. Eaton was 27-60 from the floor for 45 percent and 15-21 from the foul line for 71 percent. Eaton out rebounded Tri-Village 40-34.
