Versailles – Round One goes to the Tri-Village boys in the intracounty basketball battle between the Patriots and Versailles.

Tri-Village’s undefeated boys went on a 30-9 spree in the third quarter to break open a fiercely competitive game and defeat home standing Versailles 86-56 Saturday night.

Round Two will be contested Tuesday night in the Tri-Village gym, where the unbeaten Patriots test Versailles in a match up of two western Ohio girls’ basketball powers.

Tri-Village’s boys, 5-0, had their problems in the first half, trailing for the first time this season as Versailles’ run-and-score tactics produced a 10-6 advantage with 4:51 left in the first period.

But over the next 9:07, the Patriots outscored the Tigers 25-13, and at halftime, Tri-Village led 37-32.

At halftime, Tri-Village coach Lee Falknor decided to press the Tigers. “I didn’t want to (press),” said Falknor. “But when we did it, everything seemed to fall in place for us. We ran the floor better and we were able to get several easy baskets.”

In that 30-9 breakout:
- Versailles committed eight turnovers, with the Patriots scoring off five;
- Scoob Cook, Tri-Village’s 6-6 senior center, scored six points, had tow offensive rebounds, and two assists;
- Nate Lindamood, who shot the ‘3’ when the defense backed off and drove the baseline when he was closely guarded, was 5-for-6 from the field for 11 points;
- Shane Bietry had nine points, hitting 3-for-4 from the field and two free throws after he was fouled at the buzzer;
- Tri-Village was 13-for-20 from the floor and had four offensive rebounds.
- Versailles hit four of 11 field goal tries, but had only one offensive rebound as the Patriots grabbed a 10-4 edge on the boards.

Falknor was a little concerned about how his team would respond after it had overwhelmed Tri-County North 133-44 in a Cross County Conference game on Friday.

“This was our first double-game weekend, and it’s something we’re going to have to get used to,” said Falknor. “I was concerned about how we would be prepared mentally… and I didn’t expect us to be as fatigued as we were in the beginning. But once we got into the flow, we were alright.”
