August 2004 - New Madison

Season in Review

The Lady Patriots Basketball program has tasted success over the years and again found themselves in the hunt for another conference championship in 2003-04. When the season started not many would have expected to see the Patriot's challenge for a title.

Not only did the team challenge but they would play league, sectional and district champion Covington close for most of the game during the regular season throwing a scare into the Buccaneer faithful. They also would compete strong against 2nd place Franklin Monroe in the regular season only to find themselves in a rematch for the sectional championship. But just like the first game a dry stretch for a few minutes was all the Jets needed to capture their own sectional championship.

The team finished with a 14-9 overall record and a third place finish at 9-2 in the Cross County Conference. They were very balanced in scoring and rebounding making it very difficult to key on any one player... and strong defensively, finishing in 4th place all time giving up 41.8 points per game. One weakness exposed was poor free throw shooting which may have prevented a few losses and an area Coach Maples would love to see improve over the summer.

Graduating will be Mattie Burns, Samantha Coomer and Sara Burkhart. Burns a 3 year varsity player provided much of the senior leadership while averaging 8.6 points a game. Coomer also a 3 year player was counted on for inside power and rebounding. She averaged 6.8 rebounds and 8.1 points a game. Burkhart netted 3.1 points a game.

Juniors were Brennan Moore, Heather Deaton, Olivia Frazier and Mary Skidmore. Moore lead the team in free throw percentage at 61.2 percent and assists at 6.6, scoring 5 points and grabbing 6.4 rebounds a game. Deaton would provide inside tenacity leading the team in rebounding at 6.9 while also scoring 7.6 points a game. Frazier was the teams leading scorer at 10.9 points a game creating much of her offense driving to the basket. Skidmore would contribute off the bench providing ball handling and defensive support.

Four juniors returning next year gives reason to be excited about seeing another competitive team ready to make their mark in Patriot history.
