December 9, 2003 - Lynn, Indiana

If someone told you the Lady Patriots scored 65 points in a basketball game you would naturally assume they won the basketball game. Unfortunately that was not the case. The Patriots ran into a very impressive Randolph Southern basketball team that included a sister duo; featuring Senior Whitney and Sophomore Haley Frame. The combination of these two sisters was diffiicult to overcome.

Tri-Village started the ball game with Brennan Moore winning the tip and the ball advanced up the court for a layup. The Patriots followed that up with another layup and a quick 4-0 lead. Randolph Southern hit a 3 pointer, the first of many to come, and another two point goal and two straight turnovers by the Patriots and they found themselves down 9-4. Another turnover that led to an easy basket and a three pointer and now the score was 14-5. TV would score three baskets to close the gap and was down 16-11 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter Tri-Village made a run at The Lady Rebels with Brennan Moore and Olivia Frazier each scoring a basket to bring the score to 16-15. But Southern hit another three and each team continued to trade baskets for awhile until the 2:10 mark when the score was 24-21. That is when the Lady Rebels would have to sit down there star player Whitney Haley with her 3rd foul. However, the Patriots would not score again in the quarter including a couple of missed 2 footers at the end of the half. "We really didn't take advantage of Whitney picking up her third foul," said Coach Jim Maples. The Rebels had then stretched their lead to 32-21 at the half.

The third quarter would find TV trying to stay close and not allow Randolph Southern to run away with the game. In the quarter Mattie Burns would hit a big 3 point shot. But it was the inside play that kept the lead from getting away with Heather Deaton and Samantha Coomer contributing with rebounding and scoring. But it was the play of Olivia Frazier that kept the lead from getting away. On two consecutive trips Olivia grabbed offensive rebounds and scored as well as two other impressive drives to the rack for scores. She would score eight for the quarter and the Patriots were down 45-39.

In the 4th quarter Randolph Southern would continue to hold their comfortable lead until Tri-Village changed the pace by putting on a full court press. The press was slowing starting to rattle The Lady Rebels forcing turnovers and allowed Tri-Village to sneak back into the game. The big play in the quarter was a three pointer by Mattie Burns with 2:20 left to play that would pull them within three points 62-59. But that would be all the closer they would get as TV was forced to foul. It a would be the magnificent free throw shooting on the part of Whitney and Haley Frame that would seal the deal. Haley would finish the game shooting 13-16 from the free throw line and Tri-Village would lose 72-65.

"I'm pleased with our effort tonight," commented Coach Jim Maples, "if we play like we did tonight and score 65 points we'll win most of the games we play." "It was nice to have Mattie Burns hit 3 - three pointers tonight." Did you realize those were the first three point shots she has made this year?" "When we get the outside game going and we can start to feed off each other with both the inside and outside part of our game good things will happen for this team." As evidenced by 4 Patriot Players scoring in double figures with Frazier scoring 21, Burns 15, Moore 12 and Deaton a double double 12 points and 10 rebounds. "The keys to this game was the 13-2 run at the end of the first half and of course only shooting 8-21 from the free throw won't win many games," said Maples.

There are more positives about this team than negatives but improving free throw shooting, limiting turnovers and playing with enthusiasm could carry this team along way. More importantly this is a good tune up for league play and for now The Lady Patriots are 1-0 in the conference and will play conference foe Tri-County North at Lewisburg on Thursday December 11, 2003. GO PATRIOTS!
