Pleasant Hill – December 2, 2004
When I think of turnovers, I always think of blueberry and apple flavored pastries. If you’re a basketball coach at Tri-Village or Newton, turnovers make you reach for the pink flavor as in Pepto-Bismal. The good news for TV and Newton is that it is only game 5 into the young season.

The first quarter was an interesting one for the Lady Patriots. They didn’t score their second field goal until there were 50 seconds left in the quarter. The good news is that they were 8 for 10 from the free throw line in the quarter. The bad news is that they had one more turnover than made free throws. After trailing as much as 3 in the first quarter playing a flat man to man D, the Pats finish the quarter with a 12 – 8 lead. Newton also had problems finding the handle on the ball and most of that was caused by the full court pressure the Patriots used for the first quarter. Newton also finished the quarter with 9 turnovers.

TV starts the second quarter on a positive note as Karly Dill nails a 3 on an inbounds play at the 7:32 mark. The Pats switch to a zone D which causes Newton’s offense to struggle and gives the Pats control of the boards. The score remains 15 – 8 for over 2 and half minutes on the scoreboard as Newton continues to turn the ball over and commit fouls as the Pats penetrate their defense. The Pats miss a pair of free throws in front of one and one situations and finally the scoring drought ends when Newton’s Nicole Diers gets a bucket at the 4:50 mark. That was Newton’s first bucket in over 6 minutes of playing time and the Pats maintain a 15 to 10 lead. The Pats continue to shoot the ball well from the free throw line as they convert 4 of 6 in the last 2:07 of the quarter. The Pats maintain a 21 – 15 lead at the break. The Lady Patriots are 12 for 19 from the free throw line in the first half.

In the third quarter the Lady Pats D continues to give the Indians problems. The Patriots start off well offensively as Heather Deaton starts things off with a stick back and Brennan Moore finally gets a shot to roll in at the 6:15 mark and converts a free throw on the next possession. The Pats are up 26 – 17 at the 5:32 mark. At this point the Patriots pressure gets the best of the Indians as they go on a 14 to 2 run to end the quarter. In this run Dill would hit her second 3 of the night and find 5 of her 12 points. Brennan Moore would connect on at least 3 of her 8 assists on the night in this stretch. Frazier would find a bucket and an assist. Heather converts 1 of 2 at the line and Freshman Tina Allison would finish the scoring for the quarter with a stick back to make it 40 – 19 at the end of three. At least 10 of the 12 points were caused by the Patriot defense and Mary Skidmore was in most of those mixes that caused the turnovers.

In the 4th the Patriot full court pressure continues to roll. Coach Maples starts bringing in the subs at about the 2 and a half minute mark. The Pats were without some bench strength tonight with Brittany Bailey off to attend a family event and Sophomore Kaley Stahl is nursing an ankle injury. Freshman Addie Overfield got to see some varsity time tonight and did a solid job.

After the game Coach Maples noted that they haven’t put together 4 solid quarters yet this year. On Tuesday he noted how their man to man defense was stellar against a good Middletown Madison team and he felt that would be the key in tonight’s game. But he ended up switching to zone, which he noted it helped them rebound better in the second half. He still feels that this team can be an elite team in the league and he hopes they can build off some of the positive things that happened in the second half.

Amanda Frazier led the Pat with 14 and went 8 for 9 from the free throw line. Heather Deaton and Karli Dill both added 12 points. Tina Allison added 9, Moore 5 and Skidmore with 2. The Pats convert 20 free throws in 30 attempts on the night. Brennan Moore led the team with 8 assists and 6 rebounds. The Pats go to 3 – 2 on the year and the Indians fall to 0 -5.
