Union City - Indiana 12/20/04
The Lady Patriots were taking on the Indians at Union City tonight. Union City has had nice teams over the last couple of years including state rankings and this year’s team was no different.
TV was up to the challenge going to work quickly utilizing an aggressive style of play taking the ball to the hole on fast breaks and in a half court set. In the first quarter Brennan Moore and Olivia Frazier scored deuces with Karli Dill dropping a bomb and the Patriots were up 7-2. The remainder of the quarter featured Heather Deaton on the break, driving to the rack and a stickback for10 points giving the PATS a 17-11 lead.
Union City found scoring early in the second pulling to 17-15 when Coach Maples decided to get a timeout. The Patriots came out behind Moore who would post up inside for two and then follow it up with an aggressive drive down the lane for another score stretching the lead 21-15. Two more Indian points were countered by the inside play from Tina Allison as the PATS threw over the top for two consecutive goals. Dill & Deaton would each add a basket and TV was up 29-18 at the half.
Moore opened the third period with a jumper then another drive to the hole converting a three-point play off the foul. Deaton would add two, at 5:56 and the lead was 36-18. Finally the Indians scored a free throw at 5:30 ending a six-minute drought back to the second quarter. The rest of the period was played fairly even until Mary Skidmore penetrated and found Allison with a bounce pass for two ending the third up 42-25.
In the final stanza Dill connected on her second trifecta and TV had a twenty-point lead 45-25. “I really didn’t feel comfortable even when we had a 20 point lead,” said Coach Maples. And with reason because the Lady Indians would turn up the heat with full court pressure continuing to change defenses along the way. They would go on an 11-0 run, aided by a half dozen Patriot turnovers and missed free throws. At 2:36 they cut the lead to 45-36. Mary Skidmore once again found Allison on the block for two at 1:36 to stop the bleeding. The two teams traded baskets but… back to back Indian baskets with one being a trey and now trailing six-points 49-43 with one minute to play. TV would be on the line the rest of the way connecting on 3-6 closing the game out with a victory 52-47.
“We came as close to playing 4 quarters of good basketball as we have all year, but not quite, it was more like 3 1/2 quarters,” commented Maples. “I really thought we made good decisions for most of the game and handled the pressure except down the stretch. That was a good team we beat tonight and now we stand 7-3 on the year. If you think about it our three losses have come to Covington, who we played with for most of the game. They just beat undefeated Jackson Center. We Lost to Arcanum in a close game who just beat a very good undefeated Valley View team and to Middletown Madison who beat undefeated Waynesville.”
Heather Deaton paced the Patriots with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Brennan Moore continued her strong floor game with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Mary Skidmore also made some nice passes with 6 assists.
The JV girls fell in an exciting triple overtime affair.
