New Madison – 11/25/05

Tri-Village was playing host for the 18th Bill Burkett Lady Patriot’s Classic Basketball Tournament. Coming into the tournament Franklin Monroe was seeded first, Arcanum was second, Tri-Village third and Ansonia fourth.

In the opening round game Franklin Monroe was firing on all cylinders early and ran away from the undermanned Ansonia Lady Tigers with a 65-21 victory.

The nightcap match-up featured Arcanum and Tri-Village that would be a bit closer than the previous contest. But it was clear that on this night the Lady Trojans defense was just a bit too aggressive for Tri-Village to handle allowing them to post a 51-38 win. Arcanum will advance to the championship game tomorrow night at 7:30pm to defend their title having won the last two years in 2003 and 2004.

The Lady Patriots struck the first blow with a basket by Tina Allison inside. Both teams would remain deadlocked at 7 points each by the 2:51 mark in the first quarter. But the defense of Arcanum would force Tri-Village into numerous turnovers and they would score the next seven points to end the first quarter with a 14-7 lead.

In the second quarter Ashley Falknor would tally 6 points for Arcanum while Karli Dill would net 4 points with neither team pulling away. Tina Allison would find time on the bench due to foul trouble, yet despite this and more turnovers they would still only be down at the half by eight points 23-15 with an opportunity to get back in the game.

However in the third quarter Arcanum would turn up the heat with even more pressure and the full court press caused all kinds of problems for Tri-Village. Arcanum scored the first eight points, six by Falknor and two by Brandy O’Dell many off turnovers. Karli Dill finally was able to get a look from behind the arch at the 4:50 mark to get the Lady Patriots on the board, though it wasn’t enough to stop Arcanum’s momentum as they would connect on the next six points with Brenda Denlinger netting two inside baskets. The quarter ended with the Lady Trojans leading 46-24.

In the final stanza senior Karli Dill tried to put the team on her shoulders with another trey and numerous penetrating drives trying to create some type of offense. Tri-Village was able to mount a small comeback but the hole that was made in the third quarter was too big and to little too late as Arcanum would take the game 51-38.

Karli Dill would lead the team with 18 points, Tina Allison added 7 and a number of rebounds but… foul trouble and an injury in the third quarter limited her time on the floor.

The Patriots look to rebound tomorrow night against the Ansonia Tigers in the consolation bracket at 6pm.
