New Madison Tri-Village High School 12/8/05
It was a snowy evening all over the Miami Valley and for the Newton Lady Indians they probably would have preferred to stay home. It would be the 4th game in one week for Tri-Village who now gets a week break before their next game.
Tri-Village jumped out to a quick lead with some easy baskets inside fueled by their full court defensive pressure. Tina Allison scored 6, Karli Dill 4 and Kaley Stahl and Brittney Bailey 2 a piece to give the home team a 14-5 first quarter lead. Nicole Diers was the only player to score for Newton in the quarter.
The second period was a repeat of the first with Allison & Dill leading the way again as Tri-Village extended their lead. For Newton the play of freshman point guard Katie Stewart was all the scoring they would get in the period. Just as the half was about to end Tina Allison went down with a right knee injury and erring on the side of precaution she wouldn’t return to the lineup finishing the half and game with 11 points.
But if the Patriots thought Newton was going to come all that way to just quit they were wrong. The Lady Indians battled in the third period to a near draw to keep the lead from getting too far away. Again Dill paced the Patriots with 6 points in the quarter.
In the final stanza when Fisherback dropped in a trey to give TV their largest lead at 44-26 it looked liked the game was well in hand and coach Jim Maples freely substituted players. Newton wasn’t finished though as a host of players scored over the next few minutes while running an effective motion offense exploiting a weakness on the baseline. They outscored the Lady Patriots 10 1 to get the lead less than 10 points 45-36.
But… the free throw shooting of Amelia Frazier 5-6 in the last two minutes and a Kaley Stahl & Krystal Barton basket helped the Patriots regain control and close out the game 53-38 for their first conference victory. They now stand 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.
After the game Coach Jim Maples commented that the game was full of distractions and neither team played well. “Playing with a sub par crowd, wondering whether school would be cancelled tomorrow and what was happening outside all played on the minds of the kids, said Coach Maples. We got through it though and I’m glad we got the win. I think our zone press really created some problems for them early on and led to some easy baskets. We sort of played tired in the second half, due in part to playing a lot of games in a short period of time. Now we can get ready for our next league game against Tri-County north next week.”
The Lady Patriots were once again led in scoring by Karli Dill with 17 points followed by Tina Allison with 11 points all in the first half.
In Junior Varsity action the PATS took a 32-23 victory from Newton. Erin Bundy paced Tri-Village with 10 and Kassie Fisherback added 8 points.
