The Arcanum Lady Trojans posted a 58-36 victory over Franklin Monroe last night with Ashley Falknor erupting for 28 points. The Lady Patriots knew going into the game tonight they would have to shut down Falknor to have a chance at winning.
Part of the plan worked as the PATS held Falknor to just 4 points in the first half. However, they never dreamed that in the same half they would net just 2 of 18 field goals inside the paint.
In fact they trailed 12-1 after one quarter of play. The Patriots gave up too many offensive rebounds and Arcanum capitalized on second chances particularly Jackie Eib who would end up with 16 points.
In the second period the Patriots kept attacking inside but the lid was shut tight. Junior Margrett Cobb gave the PATS a charge as she took the ball at the Trojans and scored inside while drawing Falknor into foul trouble.
Jordyn Fisherback then closed out the half with three but Tri-Village trailed 20-7.
“If you would have told me that we would hold Ashley Falknor to 4 points in the first half and trail13 points I wouldn’t believe it,” said Coach Brad Gray.
“Our girls played good defense but we didn’t rebound well for whatever reason and if we convert half our shots in the paint we are even with them,” commented Gray.
In the third period both teams played pretty even as the young Patriots became a bit more aggressive offensively with freshmen Kaila Burns and Jordyn Fisherback looking to shoot from the outside and Amelia Frazier trying to drive the middle of the lane.
Their efforts helped to open the low block and Tina Allison took advantage of this in the second half getting some goals inside. But Arcanum was able to ride out the lead they established and went on to a 47-29 victory and the Bill Burkett Tourney Championship.
Ashley Falknor would be named the Tournament MVP with 40 total points. Joining her on the all-tournament team were teammates Jackie Eib and Betsey Printz. Tri-Village Tina Allison and Kaley Stahl were honored as well as Mara Howell from Franklin Monroe.
For the game Tri-Village was led in scoring by Allison with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Jordyn Fisherback dished out 7 assists to lead the Patriots.
The Patriots are now 1-1 on the season and host Bethel on Thursday 11/30/06 to open up conference play.
