December 16 Gettysburg, Ohio
The Lady Patriots over the last two games got a dose of reality that may have been hard to take considering the youth of the team. After falling hard to Covington and Miami East the wounded Patriots shattered confidence was ready to take on a team they had beat just two weeks ago.
Both teams started off slow with National Trail taking a 5-2 lead midway through the period. A Tina Allison fielder made it 5-4 and remained that way until 1 minute to play in the period. Freshman Shawnda Stamps would score two consecutive baskets within 30 seconds and the PATS would go up 8-7.
In the second quarter both teams continued to battle turnovers and miscues. Tina Allison picked up her third foul and Coach Gray guarded his post player by sitting her on the bench. The two teams would deadlock at the half 18-18.
Coach Brad Gray commented “I felt like our girls didn’t play with confidence in the first half and in part was due to the two previous games we played.” I told our girls to go out and play with confidence in the second half, this is a team we have beaten already this year and we need to take it to them in the second half.”
In the third quarter the Lady Patriots did just that as they pounded the ball inside getting scoring from Kaley Stahl, Tina Allison, Margrett Cobb and a drive from Amelia Frazier that opened up a 29-20 lead at the 1:15 mark.
The Lady Blazers however got two scores in the last minute to narrow the lead to 29-24.
In the final stanza T-V turned up the defensive pressure in their extended zone and National Trail was having problems penetrating the interior.
Tri-Village started to gain confidence and ran the offense more effectively in the final period as 5 different players scored on their way to a 44-31 league win.
Afterwards, coach Gray said, “I thought we started to play with more confidence in the second half.” “In the first half things didn’t come easy for us, give some credit to Coach Bolin and National Trail they played hard, harder than the first time we played them.”
“We had a couple of players in the second half start to figure out what we needed them to do,” said Gray. “Amelia Frazier started to realize she could penetrate and score… instead of worrying about just running the offense.” We play two freshman… in the last game and today’s game we played a third freshman Shawnda Stamps, we may have found a diamond in the rough, she is always around the ball and has a knack for scoring, “ said Gray.
“This was a good win for us to help us get some confidence back. We host Preble Shawnee on Monday night and if we can get a win here it will get us back to 500 which is our goal right now,” added Gray.
The Patriots placed 3 players in double figures Tina Allison with 12 points while Shawnda Stamps and Amelia Frazier both netted 10 each. Jordyn Fisherback led the way on the boards with 11 rebounds and handed out 4 assists.
