Tri-Village was hosting the Lady Preble Shawnee Arrows looking to even their record. Going into tonight’s contest on paper the two teams were fairly equal.
The Arrows jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with just minutes off the clock as Gwen Davis buried two three pointers against the Lady Patriots match-up zone.
It didn’t take Coach Brad Gray long to switch his defense and go man to man. “Davis has been averaging over 20 points a game,” said Coach Gray. “I told freshman Kaila Burns we needed her to step up and guard her and to make sure she always kept her in front. I can’t say enough about how great a job she did stepping up to the challenge.”
Tri-Village now playing man defense slowed down the Arrows and started to get in a groove on the offensive end with Amelia Frazier running the show.
“Amelia really started to gain confidence in the second half at National Trail on Saturday,” said Gray. “She sort of picked up where she left off and the girls really executed our offense well tonight,” added a pleased Gray.
After the quick start by Preble Shawnee the Patriots scored eight straight points until the Arrows netted a free throw to make the score 8-7 with 1:21 in the first period.
T-V then got fielders from Kaila Burns and Tina Allison followed by a 30’ shot from Amelia Frazier as time ran out in the first quarter and a pumped up Lady Patriot team led 15-9 after one period of play.
In the second quarter Shawnee scored first but the Patriots balanced offense was scoring inside and outside while the Lady Arrows struggled against the T-V defense. Tri-Village would extend their lead to 28-13 at the half.
The second half was all Tri-Village as they fired on all cylinders while Preble Shawnee’s shooting arrows missed the mark. The PATS then marched out to a 47-16 advantage.
The final stanza was much the same as the Patriots emptied their bench playing 4 freshmen on their way to a 57-17 non-conference victory.
“Wow, this really feels good,” said an elated Coach Gray after the game. “We needed this for our team, it was an outstanding effort by everyone. Kaley Stahl our senior really responded. I know she took a brutal tongue lashing from me at our last game but she showed her character and played a great game pulling down 10 rebounds while playing strong inside.”
“We have to get ready now to bring it Thursday night in a key conference game at Tri-County North, “ added Coach Gray.
The Lady Patriots placed 3 players in double figure scoring with Tina Allison leading the way with 17, Kaley Stahl 13 and Kaila Burns added 12 points.
The win evens T-V’s record at 4-4 overall.
