Tri-Village and Ansonia squared off for the second time in less than a week. This time around it counted in the conference. Last year TV beat Ansonia in the Burkett Tourney and then lost by one at Ansonia. It appeared early on it was going to be déjà vu as the Patriots got out to a slow start and Ansonia looked like a much more confident team but the PATS were to take a first quarter lead of 12-9.
The Tigers were able to take the lead for part of the second quarter and kept the score close until a late surge by Tri-Village. The surge was led by two freshman Teha Richards and Shaye Thomas. Richards got it started off stick back and then followed it up with trey. Thomas would then hit two goals in the last minute to give Tri-Village a 26-15 halftime lead.
In the third quarter TV was able to maintain the lead they built but couldn’t quite shake off the pesky Tigers. Ansonia was doing a good job of taking away the inside game of Tri-Village while also doing some damage of their own inside behind Jennifer Gasper and Sara Mayo both scoring goals to narrow the lead TV had to 36-29.
In the final stanza the Patriots showed good patience on the offensive end working the basketball for good shots. They were able to put the ball in the hot-hand of senior Hillarie Frech. Frech would score 8 of her game high 17 points in the stanza to help TV go on to a 51-39 win.
Although the score was similar to the first game there were signs of improvement for Ansonia. Tri-Village was able to put 9 players in the scoring column the first time and only 4 players scored tonight. Nonetheless it was a win for the Patriots, which improved their record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Patriots put 3 players in double figures led by Frech with 17 points, Shaye Thomas had 14, Linkous 12 and Teha Richards chipped in 8 in the win.
Ansonia also only had 4 players score in the game with 3 players in double figures, Ashlyn Hemmelgarn 11 points, Jennifer Gasper 14 and Sara Mayo 12,
TV is back in action on Saturday in a boys and girls double feature. The JV girls start at 3pm followed by the JV boys, Varsity girls and Varsity boys.
