Kayla Linkous and the entire Lady Patriots executed to near perfection handing the Miami East Vikings their first loss in league history.

New Madison, Ohio – February 13, 2010

The Tri-Village Lady Patriots did something that no other conference team has been able to do against the Miami East Lady Vikings. They were able to defeat the Vikings ending their 46 game win streak since joining the Cross County Conference 4 years ago. Not only did they beat the Viking but also they did it convincingly by the score of 50-36.

“We didn’t play well last year at Miami East and this team has talked about it and waited a year for this game. They were confident they could beat the Vikings, said a calm Coach Brad Gray and proved that today with almost perfect execution.”

In the opening period the Patriots aggressively attacked the 1-3-1 half court trapping defense of the Vikings. All 5 Patriot starters, Kaila Burns, Kayla Linkous, Hillary Frech, Jordyn Hill and Shaye Thomas scored in the period.

Defensively they were able to keep the Vikings out of the paint forcing them into longer shots to gain a 13-4 lead.

Miami East heated up offensively behind Lottie Hageman as she scored 9 of her game high 18 points in the second quarter. Hillary Frech and Kayla Linkous each scored 4-points to give TV a 21-16 halftime advantage.

In the first few minutes of the third period Miami East was able to mount a charge cutting the lead to 3 points twice. With 4:30 to go they narrowed the lead to one 26-25 on a Morgan Miller drive to the basket. Tri-Village responded much like they did early in the game behind Shaye Thomas by attacking the zone and again was able to get scoring from 4 different players to open up a 37-28 lead.

In the final stanza Miami East applied their usual relentless defensive pressure… but it had little effect on the Lady Patriots who handled it with aplomb and frustration took over for the Vikings.

Holding a 50-36 lead Tri-Village basically ran out the last few minutes of the clock as reality started to set-in on the Vikings that their undefeated conference run was about to come to the end. As the last seconds ran off the clock the Tri-Village fans stood and cheered in appreciation of the Lady Patriots performance in knocking off the Vikings.

“This was a great team win today, said Coach Brad Gray. The girls believed in themselves and went out and got it done. This game should help our team and give us momentum to make a nice run in the tournament … but if we go out and lay and egg than this game was for not,” concluded Gray.

The Patriots placed 3 players in double figures with Kayla Linkous scoring 14, Hillary Frech and Shaye Thomas each added 12 in the win. Tri-Village now owns a 14-5 record with one regular season game remaining on Monday night facing National Trail for the second time this year.
